Abbaye (Nahmani bar Kaylil)

   Babylonian amora. He developed talmudic dialectic as head of the academy at Pumbedita. His arguments with Rava are recorded in the Babylonian Talmud. In his teaching Abbaye distinguished between the literal meaning of the biblical text ('peshat') and the figurative interpretation ('derash').
